MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

Sustainable Home

I'd like to model a sustainable house after models in my own life. One of my relatives renovated her house to prioritize sustainability. My school, Bishop O'Dowd, built a Center for Environmental Studies, that is LEEd platinum certified Both buildings utilize architectural design to provide natural lighting and airflow that cuts down on the need for heating and electricity. This reduces the carbon emissions of he building. Each building also employs water-saving techniques including low-flow toilets and rainwater collection systems. components of both systems were also built from recycled or repurposed materials. By modeling the example of these two buildings and adding some of my own ideas, I  could drastically reduce my normal carbon footprint.

Woah that is so cool. We should definitely start to build buildings this way, to help the environment now and in the long run. I'm sure this idea is more expensive, but we would be doing the environment a favor.
