Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!
If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

My Family Footprint
My family's carbon footprint ended up becoming pretty high. There's four people living in my house. Although we're not necessarily wasteful, we're not really conscious of our impact on the world.
Most of our came from our plane travel, which made up more than a third of our carbon footprint. I'd known that planes used a lot of resources, but I hadn't realized that there was that much of an impact on our world from just two flights. In the future, we can try to fly less and take trips to nearby places. As well as flying, my family tends to drive a lot. We have two cars, and they're regularly used. Unfortunately, I'm the reason for a lot of the driving too. I have a lot of after school activities that I need to be driven to. I'd like to try walking or bussing more to help reduce our carbon footprint. It's hard to switch from driving everywhere to walking, but I think that it's a change that can actually happen.
My family is not vegetarian, so our meat consumption also does a lot to our carbon footprint. We eat rice everyday along with meat and vegetables, but the meat isn' t the main part of the meal. Therefore, I think it'd be reasonable to try reducing the meat we have during meals. There are many options to replace meat, so it's possible for my family to try.
My family's home carbon emissions were average. We tend to take short showers and manually do a lot of things, but we use natural gas as our energy source. To help reduce the carbon even more, we could try switching to more renewable energy sources like hydropower.
My family's purchases footprint was really low. We don't buy many material things and we also recycle and compost, so we don't waste much either. I think our footprint for purchases is already pretty good, but I think we could try to reuse more paper since we end up throwing a lot away.
My family's footprint was higher than average, but I think we can reduce it by just doing some simple things.
