MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

Meat is not the only factor

anitanduwimana

My family's carbon footprint for "food" surprised quite a bit at first. It went up all the way to 3118kgs which was above the average in my country. My mom is pescatarian so we rarely ever eat any meals with meat and pork since she doesn't like having to make separate meals for herself and the rest of the family. I know that the large intakes of meat people eat are a big cause to climate change since raising livestock is a major factor of climate change due to deforestation to make space for livestock, where their food is grown, and how much methane they release. So I thought that would be the only factor in how high my food carbon footprint would be but I was wrong. How much locally grown food or organic food we ate or didn't eat, eating out, etc., they were the cause of our food carbon footprint being high. We probably don't eat any locally grown foods and the only organics we eat are tomatoes, potatoes and sometimes bananas. All our other foods are the opposite, and due to that, our food carbon footprint was extremely high compared to my country's average. To change t hat I will ask my mom to buy more organic food, and locally grown food if we can find any. I will educate her and my family why that would be important for the environment and for our health too.

Response to Anita N "meat is not the only factor" I think asking your mom to buy more local food would help because than your food is not coming from somewhere else as often and polluting the air.
