MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

After calculating my carbon footprint I was shocked by my results. Fortunately, I managed to stay within the region average for the Food and Purchases sections, but my total for Transportation was more than two times the region average. That wasn’t even the worst of it. For the Home section, my total was 28 times larger than the average! My overall total per year ended up being 10 times larger than the average in the U.S.A. Before joining the ISCFC, I was not aware of the massive amounts of CO2 I released into the atmosphere and how badly I alone damaged the environment. In order to make a positive change in the environment, I have to reduce my total average. Ways I can do this is by limiting or completely cutting off the things that I do that affect the atmosphere the most. Such things include the amount of electricity and heat I use at home. When I leave a room it is important that I turn off all lights and only turn on the ones that are necessary when entering a room. Additionally, instead of constantly turning on the heater when I’m cold, I could just use more blanke ts. If everyone makes small adjustments like these in their lives then replenishing the earth will become much easier.

I completely agree with you. I too went way over the average for transportation and home. I like your ideas on how to reduce your carbon footprint. I think that I will use some of your ideas, for example, it is a great idea to bundle up with blankets and sweatshirts instead of turning on the heater. I will need to carpool more and take the bus as often as possible. I agree with your statement how everyone could just make a few slight adjustment but they could make a big difference.
