Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!
If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

If I had my own home, I would have it be more energy efficient to reduce the amount of pollution going into the atmosphere. I would put satellites on my home to allow us to have energy. I would unplug all plug in the outlets when they are not needed to preserve energy. When I wash dishes or take showers, I will keep a bucket with me to store the unused water and water the plants near. In my house, I’ll drink tap water, rather than buying bottles of water.
This will ensure no water goes to waste. I will use candles to light up the house, unless turning on the lights is completely necessary. Also, I’ll mostly eat fruits and vegetables to reduce the usage on the stove, oven, and microwave. This will also motivate me to be more healthier and exercise. I will live close to my school/job, so I could easily walk or ride my bike to school/job. This will lessen the usage of the burning of fossil fuels (gas, oil) for car uses.
I think that this is a very good idea I think that you have come up with various ways to save energy that all sound practical. Though. I believe that you may be able to do most of these things such as unplugging chords going to outlets that are not in use, but from my personal experience with my family, we do not always have the time to wash all our dishes by hand so we use the dishwasher, and depending on what you do and where you live it can be really hard to find a job/school that you like and is within biking/walking distance, and affordable. However, I think that doing as much as you can within reason to help save energy will definitely help our planet, and if multiple people do this in one family that will help reduce their carbon footprint.
