MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

My family leaves the electricity on a lot and leaves behind a massive carbon footprint which is a big problem for the surrounding atmosphere. If i had my own home, I would make sure to have an energy saving system where all unneeded lights would be turned off.

I agree that is a good idea, however I believe that there are steps YOU can take to reduce your carbon footprint. I would suggest talking to you family about their energy usage and how big of a problem it really is. Convince them to turn off the lights when their not in a room and maybe even change to more energy efficient bulbs. If that doesn't work you can also take it upon yourself to turn save energy by doing these things. Carbon dioxide in our atmosphere is a big problem and we need everyone's help to try to counteract the bad effects it has on human and natural life on Earth.

In my home, we also had a large carbon footprint. This mostly had to do with the fact that we have a lot of lights in our home and we leave them on for long periods of time. Although my family eats locally grown, sometimes we eat food from other states or countries. This factor increased my carbon footprint because the food was transported by plane or boat which emits carbon emissions into the atmophere. If I had my own house I would use solar panels to reduce the amount of electricity we use in our house. According to Solar City, "Installing solar panels on your home helps combat greenhouse gas emissions and reduces our collective dependence on fossil fuel." Also, I would think about growing a home garden with my own fruits in vegetables. Growing a garden with help reduce the amount of carbon emissions, because a boat, pane, etc, would not have to burn fossil fuels to bring it to a local supermaket.

I have realized that what truly affects my family's Carbon Footprint is how much we drive around or burn fuel while traveling. My family tends to drive everywhere during the week and on the weekends. The burning of fuel used by the car produces carbon dioxide. I have started to come up with ways to lower the amount of carbon dioxide my family is producing when traveling by car. My family and I have started to walk places near to use now that it is warm and over the weekend we spend time in our backyard, instead of going to the city or another location. My dad. mom and I have also all started to take the bus to where we need to go during the week. We also all walk home from the bus stopes instead of driving.
