MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

My Family Footprint

After reading peoples concerns about how their parents alter their families carbon outputs, this has me thinking about my situation. In one of two of my households we rarely use our air conditioning system. But, our usage of food outweighs the little use of air conditioning, we emit 14,000 Kilograms of carbon from food. While the United States, my home country, has an average consumption of 8,800 Kilograms of carbon for food. Comparing these numbers my family creates about 40% more carbon with food compared to the average American family. Going back to the originally question on how I could use less carbon in my life and how my parent affects my choices on to cut down our emission, I would say it is definitely challenging. But if I had the option of complete control on my life right now, I would probably use only LED lights because they are efficient and cheaper. I would receive my electricity from some water source if I live near a streaming river or perhaps sola r if the conditions are right. And I would live near my work to cut down the mileage on my transportation and because it would be common sense to commute closer to where you work.
