MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

At my house, we have a pretty reasonable amount of carbon usage (slightly above the average), but there are somethings I would like to improve. Unfortunately since I live with other people, it isn't always easy for me to improve our carbon usage. That being said, there are many things I would do around the house to use less carbon. First I would make sure we bought as much organic locally grown food as possible. This is because %13 of the greenhouse gas emissions in the US come from the production and transportation of food. Moreover, I would install special lights in all of my rooms. These lights would turn off as soon as you leave the room. Also I would make it so the faucets in my house turn off after running for a certain number of time. This would help the overall carbon usage and conserve energy and water. Lastly I would make sure my house gets a lot of sun and wind so i could install solar and wind generators up, further improving the carbon usage. I think  that these are excellent ways to reduce a carbon footprint and that it is good to think about conserving Carbon so we can contribute to improving our world.
