MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

After calculating the Carbon footprint made by my family, I was not surprised. I noticed that we were below average in some categories like food. One reason for this is because my entire family is vegetarian. This resulted in us having less waste in general, and not killing animals for our food is a large contribution to save the atmosphere from that extra CO2. I noticed some other aspects that we could improve on, and that other families could as well. I think that families and households in general should be more conscious of turning lights off when they do not need it. We can rely on natural light for the majority of the day, and be aware if there are any unnecessary lights on that they have not noticed.

My family's carbon footprint was not too surprising to me either. Our amount of carbon emissions was about average for people living in my area. I believe there is much more we could do to reduce our carbon footprint. For example, like Sarah, we
could change our diets to become more productive and beneficial to the planet. We could also cut back on the amount of water and electricity we use in our household.

When I saw my family footprint, i was surprised. I was about average for California (Maybe a little bit higher) however I noticed that one category where I was super high was in the transportation category. When I did some research, and I read some discussion boards, I noticed that that happend with a lot of people. Not just me. I believe that transportation is the biggest issue in our world today,  However it can be fixed. As long as everyone does everything in in their power to maximize walking, biking, and minimize using motorized vehicles, I think this can be fixed. Overall, I was very surprised at how much CO2 I was letting off.
