MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

I didn't realize how much energy was going into my home, and how much it contributed to my carbon footprint. I think that if I were to turn everything off when it wasn't being used, if I turned the heat down, or even just putting more insulation in the walls would reduce my carbon footprint. We have habits where we leave our flights on by mistake. Whenever I do that, I don't think about how much energy is actually being put into that light bulb, or bulbs to make that happen. I particularly need to be more careful.

I completely agree. After going through the process of finding my carbon footprint, I found that there are huge impacts from some energy sources in my home on the amount of carbon dioxide that I emit. Leaving on lights, for example, has a very big impact on my carbon footprint. This is something that my family does quite often, but now that I know how negatively this impacts my CO2 emissions, I will definitely turn off my lights when I am not using them. Also, leaving my phone plugged in when I don't need to charge it is something that I now try not to do. After this process of finding my carbon footprint, I try to be more careful about not using energy when I don't need it.

I totally agree, and I learned through this program that my home carbon footprint is more the than twice the average for my state because of how many lightbulbs I use. They're even LED! The best thing to do is to turn them off when you leave the room, but even having them off uses a little bit of CO2. A great solution would be to just only use the lights that you really, really need in a room and unscrew the other bulbs that aren't necessary.
