MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

What YOU can do to better your home

Personally, in my home, we have always been very aware of our carbon footprint by becoming aware of how much less energy we COULD be  using. However, I want not just my home to be aware of this, so I thought I would share what my family and I have done to reduce our carbon footprint. The first rule we always follow is to turn off everything when we're not using it. For example, we don’t leave the toaster, blender, or coffee machine plugged in all day if we don’t need it. This helps reduce how much energy we are using AND our energy bill. Another routine we follow is always turning off lights if we are not in the room. As we filled out the forum to get our carbon footprint, it was shocking how little energy you can use by changing the amount of time the lights are on in your house. The third routine we follow would be composting, and heavy recycling. Recycling is already known to be extremely important to our earth, however composting is extremely beneficial as well. Also, buying organic food whenever possible can also lower your footprint. After following all of these me thods and routines, my carbon footprint came out to be about 7,000. I hope that together with your family we can work to help the Earth!

I think the contributions your family is making to reduce your carbon footprint is amazing. One way my family has tried to reduce our carbon footprint is by installing solar panels above our roof. We also unplug our electronics, our toaster and coffee machine when they aren't in use. Lastly we always try to turn off the lights when we aren't in the room. The solar lights we have installed in our house has also come in handy to conserve the amount of energy we use.
