MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

What can families do to help?

JoanneSLLHS

My carbon footprint was 27,952. Although the majority of the carbon footprint was from flying during the summer, there are also small things that my family can do to help the environment besides flying less often. For example, my family can turn off the lights every time we leave and enter the room, or walk and bike to places opposed to driving everywhere. We could make sure to recycle as much as possible, or reuse printer paper if only one side was used. All these simple tasks could lead to a better and healthier community, one step at a time.
I was stunned that my carbon footprint was very high, and learned a lot from what I can do to help reduce my footprint. At first, I thought that I couldn’t make a difference to the environment, and didn’t really care about what was going on to the environment. However, the more we learned about this topic, the more I got into the ways I could help and realized that by doing simple tasks and breaking certain habits, I can help make a difference to the environment. We can all come together and reducing our carbon footprints by  breaking simple habits such as turning off the faucet when brushing your teeth, or turning off the AC when no one is home. We can all make a difference and help stop the environment from becoming worse; before it is too late.

My carbon footprint was high because of flying as well. Turing lights of when leaving the room is great but sometimes are days are crazy and we forget. having lights that sense when people aren't there would be a great option for those that are forgetful.
