MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

Family Footprint and the Big Picture

When I was filling in the survey about how much carbon that we produce I was really surprised about some of my data. My overall amount of carbon footprint was 14,056. This amazed me because it was quite a bit over the average which was around 9500. As I was looking back over my results and what I selected in the survey, I realized that a huge factor to the larger amount of carbon footprint for me was lights. Our house isn’t that big but we have a lot of lights that are on for long periods of time. Also, some of our transportation factored into this because we usually take around two flights a year and we drive quite a ways every summer to see family.

Through this whole thing I discovered that there are many ways to emit less emissions and carbon so we can save the environment. This goes for single households and large businesses. When carbon goes into the air, it affects the environment but it also costs us money. We have to rebuild things if there is a natural disaster and update systems. But some of these updates are good. According to climatehotmap.org, even though s o much money is spent, it all goes for a good cause in the long run. When houses and big buildings are energy efficient, that helps the environment. Even when we have to rebuild, we make these structures stronger for the next time. We need to help the environment and starting small is good but we need to get the bigger picture. I have learned that simply turning off the lights when you are not in the room already saves energy and emits less carbon. Little things will go a long way.
