Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!
If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

What can we all do
My family uses a lot electricity. We also travel a lot. We have 5 people in ours and we seem not to care if we accidently leave the lights on or if we use too much water. Then also we live too far from anything just to walk there so we travel a lot and everyone in my family has a car if not two. We try not to use too much of things but we usually end up not being too worried if we do.
It really can seem difficult to break the habits, especially when they are convenient. Even doing little things like taking shorter showers or turning off the lights can be helpful. The emissions from cars are one of the biggest problems so anytime it is possible to carpool it is a good opportunity.
I also agree that it can be very difficult to reduce the amount of carbon emissions when coming from a a big family. My family consists of 7 people. My family also uses a lot of electricity and our main source of transportation is by car. I live far from school so we drive a lot within the span of a week. But, in contrast, my family tries to be less wasteful. We turn off the lights before we leave the house, we turn off the television when not in use, and also turn off electric heating earlier in the year. If all families developed little habits like these, it could make a big contribution to our environment. These small habits reduce the carbon emissions into the atmosphere which helps benefit our Earth. In a study from the Graham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College London it is stated that any reduction made in our electricity use, for example, if everyone switched off their lights that they weren't using, it could have a bigger impact on the reduction of the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by power stations. I think this is an important idea that all fam ilies must keep in mind.
