MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

Inequality and Carbon Footprints

I calculated my carbon footprint a while ago and the results showed that it is much larger than the average human. If everyone lived the way I do we would need about 6 Earths. This information was kind of like a reality check. There are people in the world that have much less than I do and in a way, it is because of this that I live the way that I do and have many luxuries in my life. This is extremely unfair.
My family decided to invest in a grey water system. Greywater systems generally utilize water from sinks, tubs, showers and washing machines and this water can be used for irrigation. Greywater systems can reuse 50-80% of water used by a house. Some research has shown that households save up to 50,000 gallons of water per year. There are many benefits to Greywater systems some being financial and others being more environmental. The obvious benefit is that Greywater systems reduce the amount of water we use however these systems also keep water out of septic tanks which can decrease the chance that the water from the septic tanks will eventually pollute local water  systems
Other ways that we have tried to reduce our carbon footprints is by reducing the amount of meat that we eat and composting and recycling any time that we can.

yes, Sisi, it's important to remember that inequality, and also that the poorer countries in the world want to develop to the level that thse of us in richer countries have attained.

That is a natural desire, but how can that happen without drastically worsening climate change?  Can we really justify our current lifestyle?
