Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!
If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?
MY Family Footprint >
My Eco-friendly Family
If I had my own home, I would begin by making the wise investment into solar panels that source energy from the sun and store excess in batteries. At night and in overcast conditions, I could use this saved up power or sell it back to the energy company. When I have a family, I would teach everyone sustainable practices so that bad habits do not form so we can have a low carbon footprint, in respect of the Earth. Furthermore, I would invest in the most up-to-date appliances and light bulbs that are very efficient and guaranteed to lower energy consumption as well as cost. This example has worked for my family in the past as we upgraded to a new tv and washing/drying machine as well as progressively converting all our light bulbs to LED bulbs. This process was at first very costly, however, in the long run, it saved my family money on energy costs while at the same time benefiting the environment. Ideally, my house would be located in a setting with a lot of light to power the solar panels and support a garden. More specifically, I would prefer a home near the city and ea sy public transportation so that I could bike throughout town and take the bus if I need to go further. In terms of food, I would do my best to primarily rely on ingredients from my own garden or a farmers market. These options both help the environment and support small business owners for selling healthy, locally grown products. Considering all of these changes, I hope that my virtual household is highly energy efficient and that other families see it as encouragement to take the measures that I did and become more environmentally friendly.
I agree with this topic, Matthew! We are the future and the most important thing is to act as quickly as possible. We always have to remember that Earth's resources are limited, and if we do not take this into account, we and the environment will suffer. The change must start from us, and the first step is to conspire the danger we are in, then act together with family, friends and not only. All the measures we take, no matter how small they are, can help us we see only "green" around us. So we and Earth will smile together. I'm ready to start the adventure to a better future! You are ?
