MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

Switching to LED Light Bulbs

j_michael

While gathering information and calculating my carbon footprint, I noticed that majority of the light bulbs used in my house are incandescent. Even though my family uses high-efficiency incandescent bulbs, I believe that switching to LED bulbs could be a better option. First of all, LED bulbs are also energy efficient and waste less energy as heat. Secondly, less bulbs are needed when using LED light bulbs because they distribute light better. Lastly, LED bulbs have a longer life span than most light bulbs, which reduces the need to replace them often. All in all, I think that considering the switch to LED light bulbs could contribute to reducing my family's carbon footprint.

I agree and found the same thing with my family. I also never realized how much time my family spent with the lights on, especially at times when we didn't need to be using them. I think we need to be more aware of how much electricity we are actually using and limit the amount of time spent with the lights on.

While I was collecting data for my carbon footprint, I noticed that the light bulbs in my home were a huge contributor to my high result.  Since my house was built in 1931, most of our bulbs are incandescent, which are not as energy efficient as LED bulbs.  If could redesign my house to make it eco-friendlier, I would change out our incandescent bulbs for LED bulbs.  There are several benefits to doing this.  Incandescent bulbs waste excessive amounts of energy due to the amount of heat released.  LED bulbs nearly eliminate this problem as they produce much less heat than incandescent bulbs.  Other advantages to switching to LED bulbs are their lack of dangerous chemicals and their long life span.  With a longer life span, you do not have to keep purchasing more and more bulbs, which positively impacts your footprint.  In conclusion, the main contributor to my carbon footprint is my home’s lighting, and this can be changed by switching to LED bulbs.
