MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

Reduce MY Family Carbon Footprint

rachelm10

My overall carbon footprint for my family is 15,293 and I believe there are ways I can help to reduce that number. One of the major things I think would help to reduce my family's carbon footprint would be to start recycling more so that way we are throwing away less and less plastic and harmful materials into the landfills. I also think that if we start to be more cautious of how many lights we turn on or leave on it would help with the footprint as well.  Another way to reduce the footprint would to be to wait till we have a full load of laundry to do instead of only washing some clothes it could be more beneficial to wash in a few loads on one day instead of several days throughout the week.

I think you have some great ideas when it comes to reducing your carbon footprint. My family has always stressed the importance of turning off lights when were aren't using them, and my family is also big on recycling. I never took into consideration reducing the amount of times we do laundry, but I think that is highly beneficial to reduce one's carbon impact.

I definitely agree that decreasing the amount of loads of laundry we do, by doing full loads, is a good conscious way to decrease your footprint. One major thing my family does because we are constantly commuting from place to place, is we always are apart of a carpool with many other people. This is any easy and convenient way to decrease our carbon footprint.

Ever since I started learning about how we pollute our earth with CO2 emissions, I have been concerned about our environment.  I realized when I used the carbon footprint calculator that I am contributing to the problem.  I had no idea that taking plane trips would have such an impact on the environment.  It’s amazing to me that the beatiful places that I am traveling to are also hurt by the pollution the plane flight is creating.  I also realized that eating meat contributes to the CO2 emissions in our world along with the way we heat our homes and the things we buy.
This all made me think about how I could contribute to making our environment more healthy.  At this point I know I will keep traveling on airplanes.  I usually only travel by plane twice a year.  I also know that for now I will continue to eat meat.  So, what can I do to make an impact?  I found a great article about all the ways we can cut back our carbon footprint.  The article lists 20 different ways.  Some are simple and some are more complicated.  For me I will turn off lights when I am not in the roo m.  I will also make more of an effort to walk to places that are further than usual.  I will recycle as much as possible and take shorter showers.  Another important way is to educate my family and others about what we are doing to our environment and ways to cut back.  I suggest you look at this article and find ways you can contribute and help you to educate your family. Every little bit helps.

Recycling more and focusing on washing only full loads of laundry are great ways to reduce our footprint.  Similarly, my family could try to also only wash full loads of dishes in our dishwasher.  We could also try to ride in one car whenever possible to reduce my transportation portion of my footprint, which was the biggest section for me.  Recycling is very important, but another thing to focus on is reusing more.  Instead of buying disposable plastic cups that can be recycled, we can buy cups and bowls that we wash and use over and over again.  These are simple things to think about that could help in reducing our carbon footprints greatly.

I totally agree with you. My family has always stressed even the small things like turning of the lights or water when not in use. Even these small things can help reduce your carbon footprints. You have some very good ideas. I agree with the fact that reusing is very important. My family buys cups that are able to be reused and strays from styrofoam cups and paper plates. Transportation became a big part of my footprint once I entered in the plane trips I had taken. I never really thought about how much one flight can impact my carbon footprint. I think my transportation portion balanced out when I said that I carpooled. Carpooling helps with the decrease in the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere.

I think so too! my family has lights that we don't even use ever! Plus after finding how many lightbulbs i have in my house it was huge, but after i took out the lightbulbs i don't use, my foot print went down by a huge amount, i think that shows how people should use as much natural light as they can!

carpooling, turning off lights, try to take shorter showers and walk more

My family travels a lot and we drive a lot, what could my family do to lower their  carbon footprint for transportation?

jackm-usa

I agree, my family went on many flights last year, resulting in my overall carbon footprint resulting in over double the average carbon footprint.z
