Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!
If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?
MY Family Footprint >
My Dream Home
The location of my home is already quite ideal. I live near the school, which is a walkable distance. There’s a bus stop two minutes from my house, and I live ten minutes (walking distance) to the closest train station. My dream home would be located around necessities that I need in a walkable distance. But there are still quite a few things that I would want in my dream home. A lot of my carbon footprint in my home comes from having a house mainly powered by gas, throwing any kind of material into the garbage, and not eating organic/locally grown food rather than food that comes from overseas. In my dream home, my main priority would be having my house powered by some sort of renewable energy (solar or hydro). Another priority would be using separate bins for garbage, paper, etc… Also, I would eat more locally grown and organic food, but also make sure I have a garden so I can plant my food. All of these actions would significantly decrease my carbon footprint.
