Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!
If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?
MY Family Footprint >
My Strategy To Improve My Family Footprint
If I were to have my own home, I would change many things, big and small, to make the home more energy efficient. To just name a few, I would unplug any devices not being used, buy an energy efficient refrigerator, buying LED or fluorescent lights, I would not have a TV, not use the heat or air conditioning at all...etc. I would get my energy from solar panels that would be the main source for the home, placed on the roof. My house would be near places I usually go because this would help me lessen my footprint. Location influences my carbon footprint because transit increases this from cars and buses. If I had to move from a closer distance, I could lessen my footprint and help out the planet, and to do this I would need to live next to places I go to everyday such as my job, school, and local transit options. And finally, I would get my food from local produce stores. From these stores I would get locally grown produce, like eggs, meat and other organic options. Also, from these places I'd buy food I would not need technology to make, such as salads because stove tops , ovens, microwaves...etc are used frequently and cutting down on this would improve the family footprint. All of these things are just a few changes, but there are hundreds of small and big ways I could improve my family footprint in my own home.
I totally agree! If I were to have a home of my own later in life, I would want something that is almost like a biome. This means that the house would grow it's own plants and much more. Further to the point the starting energy that I get would then be redistributed back into the house inn other forms of electricity. I would try to include the different cycles of the atmosphere. I would use a certain car or bike that would save my imprint and even try to make my own food through the biome house to even further decrease my carbon dioxide imprint.
