MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

If I had my own home...

If I was able to purchase and design my own home, I would make sure it would be as energy efficient as possible. I would have solar panels for energy, and make sure everything like the heating, air conditioning, stove, and washer/dryer were electric. This way, they wouldn't use/waste gas, but rather use the energy created from the solar panels. I would also make sure to recycle and compost as much as possible. I would try to use less trash by buying things in bulk or using reusable containers to store food. This way, we could produce little trash each year, and help to not promote big companies that are making these products in oil refineries. I would also try to by an electric car. If i had an electric car, I would lower my carbon footprint by a lot. A source by NRDC.org states that "If we electrify all of them with renewably generated, zero-carbon electricity by 2050, we will address a huge part of the climate challenge for transportation." If people do their be st to use electric cars, it will help the environment a lot, especially since cars and transportation are a huge factor in our everyday lives.
