MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

If I had my own home...

If I had my own home, I would use solar panels to produce 100% of the house's electricity.  I would purchase high efficency toilets, washing machines, sprinklers and dish washers.  I would grow my own food in the back yard and live a vegan lifestyle.  If I had my own home, I would recycle all of my waste and compost the food scraps.  I would also own a hybrid electric car.  If I am able to achieve any of these things, I will be able to reduce my carbon footprint extremely.

I completely agree. Although it is expensive to do many of these things, the benefits are great. I especially like the idea of using the solar panels to produce all of the energy for your home. Additionally, because I live across the street from my elementary school, I have found that being in walking distance to school is very efficient.

I agree with this as well. When I tested my own carbon footprint, I discovered that the energy usage in my house was way over the average. I believe most of the energy wasted was from the plethora of incandescent lights. If i had my own house, I would try to use LED and CFL lights instead of the incandescent bulbs that waste energy.

I love your idea

Nice idea about the solar panels, but they aren’t the cheapest you know, but I still think that I can implement it in a way..

I agree with you on one thing. It will be better and more efficient but all of you ideas will cost a lot of money. So on average it will be harder for people to get all of the supplies and tools that you proposed in your idea.

I understand where you are coming from, but have you looked into the negative impacts of solar panels? Also they are highly inefficient. I think nuclear power, wind energy, and hydropower are probably cleaner and more efficient forms of energy.

Ineffable

I agree with you about this. Your carbon footprint would be reduced, though it may be expensive to achieve some of those things you listed.
