Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!
If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?
MY Family Footprint >
Steps to Decrease my Families Footprint
There are several steps that I would take to make my families footprint smaller. I would start out small with decreasing the amount of time we shower for, turning lights off when we're not using them and spend more time walking places than driving a car. We should also try to recycle more things than we have been and using reusable bags at a grocery store. Later on I would try to switch our energy source over to solar power. This would be more environmentally friendly and may help us save and even earn money. When I buy a house I want it to be close to everything. I want it to be close to schools and my work. If this isn't possible than I would try to find a group of people to carpool with. This will help everyone decrease time spent in a car every day and the amount of cars on the road. I think it would be a good idea to buy a lot of my fruits and vegetables from local locations or ones that are made organically.
I agree I think everyone could start doing more around their houses to reduce their footprint. Not everyone realizes the big effect it has on the planet.
I think that those are great ideas, and it would really help if everyone started with at least doing small things to change, since i realize that not everyone can make drastic changes at the moment, but every little action counts towards a bigger goal of helping our planet.
Also, another idea of how we could help reduce our footprint is to start buying more recycled products, since recycling doesn't help unless we make a choice to use those products instead of creating more waste.
I agree with that statement, "recycling doesn't help unless we make a choice to use those products instead of creating more waste." Because from my point of view, there are many people that say we, as a society, should recycle more. However, even if we do recycle what about what happens after the process? What if more and more people decided to recycle but only a few of those people actually used the recycled products? I would start to question the objective of recycling. Recycling is more efficient and environmentally friendly but if no one's using the recycled products the piles of waste would just add on which wouldn't help with the process of decreasing the amount of CO2 released in the air and climate change.
Yes I agree with you every small change helps in the long run.
I think that this is really important to do in many households. I would love to try that.
