well Instead of taking long showers I would take faster showers. I would turn off the lights whenever I don't use them. I would also start growing my own vegetables and some fruits. The advantageous to growing your food however is that it takes months for them to grow.

I agree with this. If everyone took small steps it would create a big impact. In California it’s very important to monitor our water usage because of the droughts we get.
