MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

Composting

At home we should start composting our fruit and vegetable peels instead of just throwing them away.

Ineffable

Yeah, I agree that we should start or continue composting, as it has plenty of benefits to the environment. Such as, improving the quality of soil and reducing greenhouse gases.

I agree with this. Food waste is such a large problem when we can get rid of this problem while creating useful soil full of nutrients.

I think this is a really simple way to help out the environment and is something anyone can do.

I’ve wanted to do this several times but things always seemed to get in the way. I would still like to try to though because the reality is that it isn’t that difficult to start composting.

I agree that we should start composting. It is a great way to use egg shells, fruits and vegetable peels instead of throwing them away, adding to the amount of waste. It is also a great use to help with soil. Composting will definitely be an efficient way to help the environment.

I agree it is an easy way to help the environment every day. Also, it gives back to the environment and makes the soil more fertile. The fertile soil helps produce healthier plants that help sustain our growing population

This is a very good point. You should also encourage your schools to compost and create home gardens for the cafeteria. We have both of these things at our school and in my experience is has been very useful to the school's carbon footprint.

I love composting and my family has always composted our food waste. It prevents so much food waste from ending up in anywhere other than where it could easily go, which is back into the Earth. I live in a very liberal area that values care for our Earth, so it's always a little shocking when I go into other communities where they don't compost their food. It is somewhat frustrating because it is a somewhat easy way to instill a new way of care for our planet.

To add on to everyone else you should compost but also on top of that we should also try to find ways to reuse our compost scraps. I know it sounds really weird but, you can reusing tea bags because tea bags can steep and get more flavour out if you leave tin hot water for only 5 min. You can also reuse vegetable scraps by boiling them in water to make a vegetable stew, now there  are many more recipes like that. Fact did you know that the tips of the celery stalks are the best for making soups and stews? Also you can find videos that show you how to make your own homemade cleaners with orange peels. So composting is great but try reusing items in there before you compost them.
