MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

My family footprint...

At my house we try our best to reduce or carbon footprint. Having such a large family it can be difficult but we mange to reduce or carbon use in many ways.

We use fans and portable heaters during the fall and spring. During the fall and the spring the climate isn't so extreme than it would be in the winter or fall, so we resist using ac unit to something more sustainable.

We like to compost. We have a fairly large garden at our house so in order to maintain it we created a compost bin. Instead of throwing away fruit peels and foot waste, we throw it in our compost bin.

We carpool. Since I have multiple siblings and we all go to school we like to carpool with each other and other close friends. This heavily reduces our carbon footprint.

We recycle a lot. One thing that we have done for a long time is recycle. We have four separate bins, one for plastic bottles, tin cans, glass, and paper. I think that every family should do this because it's easy, responsibl e for the environment, and some recycling center even pay you to give them recycling. It is a lot more beneficial to you and to the environment.

I agree with you, and we share similarities about the recycling part. However, my family only has two bins, one for plastic/glass and one for paper. While reading your comment, I realized that it would be a good idea if we also got more bins so we can separate our recycling even further. Especially during our current situation, it's important to recycle more than ever because it's very beneficial to the earth and it's inhabitants, including us.

I think that this is a very important thing that all families should keep into consideration.  The idea of having more bins in order to separate our recycling is a very smart one. For example having one bin for cardboard and one for plastics. In the United States we throw away $11.4 billion worth of recycle every year. Another type of recycling that people don't think of is clothing, 11 billion tones of different kinds of clothing are thrown away into landfills. Not only does recycling lower our carbon footprint it also helps save marine life, there are 25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Plastic causes over 80% of the negative effects on marine animals and over 100,000 marine animals die every year from ingestion of plastics and entanglements. For all of these reasons, this is why families should think about throwing their recyclable plastics, cardboards and other recallable items in the recycle instead of the trash. This small action could help lo wer the amount of waste we have, lower our carbon footprints and save marine animals.
