MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

If I had my own home I would include solar panels in my home to allow sun to reflect back into my house and provide energy for my home. I would get my electricity from using gas. My house would be away from everyone so u would be able to have my own efficient levels for my home. I would live near  a school if I had kids and would use local transportation if I lived far away from where I worked. I would get my food from a local farmers market to not only support local production but also support getting food from areas that don't produce as much air pollution to get the product to me.

I agree with you on everything except for solar panels. Solar panels are a great way to reduce the use of fossil fuels and reduce carbon dioxide but they are not very efficient unless they are in specific climate. If you live in a place that does not have a lot of sun then solar energy would not work good for you. Fossil fuels are very bad for the environment but they are the most efficient and you can use them anytime. You would not be able to get much energy on a day that is cloudy and you would have to pay a bunch of money in order to store energy for it. At night they won't work either because there is no sun. I do agree with the public transportation and the not using your own car part too.

With my personal experience in my own house I can say we have made a huge impact in carbon emissions over the 10 years my family has installed solar panels. My father installed 100 solar panels and the meter readout has informed we have reduced our carbon footprint in the last 10 years by over 1,095,000 kilograms of CO2! Using a carbon calculator that amount is equal to a 747 aircraft flying non-stop for 1 1/2 days. http://www.yousustain.com/footprint/how … co2=300+kg

I think solar panels are very expensive in my area, besides it takes a long time to install them. We have hydroeletric plants to produce energy, so we never need other sostenables energies, but the carbon emissions are equal to 0
