MY Family Footprint

Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!

If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?

High Usage

It can be very difficult to cut down energy usage in some houses. Some require energy to upkeep the house or keep it livable. When people need things like medical equipment that require lots of energy or important work that needs batteries they can spend a lot of energy and have no choice. People also may have long commutes which they need to do for work. In scenarios like these, the best thing to do is make sure that all energy comes from green sources. It can also be helpful to optimize usage, turn off things when they're not being used and carpool or take public transportation.  Essentially if your family needs lots of energy do your best to get it from green sources.

I think that this is really true, especially for me. I have to drive a long distance for school, and that adds up on my carbon emission, and the only solution is moving closer, so some things have no solutions. 4/13/19

I believe that this is true, for me too. My house requires the heat to be on most of the time because of poor insulation which uses a lot of energy. I also have to drive long distances to school which increases my carbon footprint.

I agree with all of what you said. Trying to cut down where you can is important especially since it is really hard to control somethings like the distance from our houses to school and seeing family far away.  All of my extended family is living in Southern California now and I try to see them as much as I can but that makes my carbon footprint for traveling go way up.
