Many students using our footprint calculator said that they could not pledge to reduce their home footprints because they were not making the decisions for the household. Here is your chance to design your own sustainable virtual household!
If you had your own home, what would you do to make it more energy efficient? Where would you get your electricity from? Where would your house be? Would you live near to your school or work or local transit options? Where would you get your food from?
MY Family Footprint >
A Clean Family Footprint
It can be hard to change your families lifestyle to something more environmentally friendly, especially if you are used to living a specific way and changing that lifestyle could be difficult to do. But there are a many ways that a family can reduce their carbon footprint, even if the change is small. For example, you could have a compost container in your kitchen to automatically throw away waste that decomposes instead of putting it into the trash. This is not a very large change but could easily help make your house a little more healthy and green. Another small step your family could take would be to remember to turn off lights when you leave a room, and unplug chargers even if they aren't connected to anything. This saves electricity and the unnecessary burning of more carbon. My family tries to take small steps like these to reduce our carbon footprint little by little.
I agree with this. Climate change and increased carbon emissions often seems like it is out of our control, but if we are conscious about reducing our emissions in our everyday lives it can gradually make a difference. These changes may include purchasing local foods, taking short showers, turning off unnecessary lights, limiting car trips, and recycling and/or composting waste. If more people are more aware of this issue and the ways that they can help, then this could have a significant impact and potentially slow down climate change.
I personally try to reduce my carbon foot print much as possible. I try to car pool when I can, because public transportation is not open to my access. My family does the same
I definitely agree. I also try to reduce my carbon footprint every day. I try to carpool, turn off all lights while I am not using them, I take short showers and try not to waste food. If everyone tried to reduce their personal footprint, the earth would definitely benefit.
I agree. I think if we do encourage our family’s to decrease out footprint it will make a difference. It can be as easy as shutting off the lights when not needed, meaning when not in the room or by using natural light for lighting during the day. Also by taking short showers and not running the dishwasher when not completely filled. These small things will decrease our family footprints.
Little efforts make big impacts overall. Taking the bus/carpooling, taking shorter showers, putting on a sweater instead of turning on the heat, etc. can really decrease your family's collective carbon footprint.
I definitely agree that the small efforts to be more energy efficient can help. If we all try to do our part even if it means simply taking shorter showers or turning off lights, we can reduce our carbon footprints. While some families may not like the idea of spending money on solar panels or electric cars, these small acts provide an easy way to help the environment.
I do agree with this statement. A lot of our lifestyle is releasing carbon dioxide and we do not even know it. Using appliances, water heater, and air conditioner is a big part of our carbon footprints. A lot of families travel a lot by car which is not helpful to the environment. My family travels in car all the time. Two years ago we were going to the Final Four in Phoenix and we drove a car all the way there. I have only taken two airplanes in the last two years. People need to start thinking about using less of their car and using more public transportation such as airlines, buses, and trains. This will helps a lot. My family's carbon footprint is very high because we drive our car so much.
Another way to reduce your families Carbon footprint could be installing solar panels (if you have the money) or reducing the use of your heater around the house especially if it is produced by gas. Lastly, an important part of reserving energy is to turn off the lights when you aren't using them especially when you leave the house.
I agree with you. I think that a way that we can stick to these rules is by sitting down with your families and talking about it. If your family enforces these simple things in your house then you are able to actually follow through with these things and do them. With my family, our electricity bill was raising significantly and we talked about how we should all turn off the lights. This helped us all follow through with these things.
