Any way one can ride a bike or walk to their desired location is helping the environment out by not using fuel. Having the ability to purchase locally produced food that is a bike ride or walk away is very convenient. There are also Sunday markets that transport organic fruits and vegetables to local towns. I have one located down the street from my house that I can walk to and replenish my fridge with such food groups. If only there was a way that I could simply just walk into my backyard to grab fruits and vegetables. Oh wait, there is! Bishop O'Dowd actually has a living lab in which plants are being grown by teachers and students. In addition, Providing a garden for ones household is both fun and rewarding. The first step is to establish healthy and fertile soil made up of a mix of dirt and organic materials such as compost, manure, and leaves. These materials provide nitrogen that is a prominent nutrient source for plants. It is best to have fewer rows to acquire more space for growing other foods. This also enables the plant to shade the ground and act as a cooli ng source for the soil that decreases the amount of watering it will need. Vertical supports for small gardens will help keep the plants structure and growing upward, not out. Weaving of the plant through trellised supports is recommended, especially for cucumbers and tomatoes. An important aspect when growing a garden is to do background information on the certain plants growing in it to make sure they are getting the requirements and needs met to keep them healthy and long lasting. I definitely want to implement something like this in my backyard because home grown foods are always so much more delicious than what most stores have to offer. However, local farmers no a days are growing their foods more organically and efficiently. When my family buys foods from these farmers we are insured that our money is going back to a cause the is environmentally friendly and is going to give back to the environment.
