How much does eating locally-produced food help the climate problem? What are the other potential environmental and social benefits of eating locally-grown/produced food? Do you have a food garden in your school or at home? If not, do you want one?
Home Grown >
Why is homegrown food important?
Because today, we face a similar task of epic proportions: climate change.
And gardening might be one the best and brightest ways that we can both individually and collectively face this challenge, particularly in developed countries.
One of the most effective ways to combat climate change is the simple act of planting a garden.
A local food policy can help increase the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables. This can help balance the tendency in our society to eat highly processed “fast foods” that cause heart disease, diabetes, and other diet- related illnesses. Also, a food policy can encourage improved institutional nutrition standards at schools, hospitals, businesses, etc.
