How much does eating locally-produced food help the climate problem? What are the other potential environmental and social benefits of eating locally-grown/produced food? Do you have a food garden in your school or at home? If not, do you want one?

Knowing Where Our Food Comes From
Just reiterating what most people have already said, eating locally-produced food not only helps the climate problem that our world is facing, but it also benefits those consuming and producing the food on a more local level. I would think that local fruits and vegetables would be more fresh and healthy, since there wouldn't be any preservatives in contrast to the food that would be coming from across the state. Buying from small and local businesses/gardens/farms would also help fuel the local economy. Purchasing locally-grown food reduces the amount of packaging used and it also cuts down the fuel it would take to purchase from a Safeway or Lucky's.
I think it's important to know exactly where the food that we put into our system comes from. The fact that some of us can't even point that out shows our disconnect with the beauty of soil, seeds, gardens and farms. We discount the process of actually growing our food and showing appreciation to the food that keeps us alive.
At my school, we have about two gardens on campus, but there is no consistency in its care taking, so I will try to think about other ways I can raise appreciation for the garden.
I completely agree with you. I think that eating locally does not directly affect the climate problem. However, if takes out the middle man. Nowadays, we have no idea where our food comes from. That is not health point blank. We do not know what type of preservatives are being used, nor how fresh our produce is. Food can be frozen, thawed, then placed on supermarket shelves marked as “fresh.” There are lawsuits that say that fresh has a different definition than non-frozen.
Health rant aside, local farms and gardens tend to reduce packaging. It also takes away the mass consumerist aspect as well. With mass consumerism, it is all about quantity, the environment is barely regarded
