How much does eating locally-produced food help the climate problem? What are the other potential environmental and social benefits of eating locally-grown/produced food? Do you have a food garden in your school or at home? If not, do you want one?

Local food is greener

Nowadays it has become so common to drive to the grocery store and buy food that we haven't stopped to think about what the food had to go through to get there. The food that you find at a supermarket is usually shipped hundreds of miles. This leads to a big carbon footprint and even if the food is grown locally, the farmers may not be using sustainable farming method. This is why home grown food is so important. Homegrown or locally grown food is fresher and usually tastes better because there is no need to add preservatives. This means will have to eat seasonally but that isn't a big deal. It is better to wait a while to eat locally grown tomatoes bursting with flavor then to eat tomatoes that are artificially ripened with gas.

Eating locally grown food also decreases the chance of any food disease or contamination. According to Molly Watson, a local foods expert "The fewer steps there are between your food's source and your table the less chance there is of c ontamination."

I think it is important to know what you are eating and you can  do that by eating locally grown food and at the same time, reduce your carbon footprint.

I just recently picked up some veggies at the super market and thought to myself; Is this a gmo? Where did this come from? How much pesticide does it have on it? I completely agree with you about the importance of homegrown foods. I can wait a season to enjoy the foods I like so that I can be confident of where the food came from and what I'm putting in my body.

I totally agree with you because if each of us did this it would cut out a huge portion a carbon out of our atmosphere and make it better for us. It is also very beneficial to us like you said because you would be eating something that you know all the things you did and put into it to be ready. Unlike most food which we don't always know the whole process and the chemicals that are added. It would be a lot healthier and create a better eating habit and not only helping us but helping each other around us.
By purchasing food that is processed it may come from far away which it usually does, we don't just not know what we are actually putting into our bodies but we are killing trees and plants and and creating a worse environment for our food to grow in so that causes a double negative to us and everybody else. Overall home grown food should be taken into consideration because there are many benefits to everything and everybody.

Homegrowing the food is a fun process and we should encourage others to do it accordingly. Also you learn a lot about plants.
