How much does eating locally-produced food help the climate problem? What are the other potential environmental and social benefits of eating locally-grown/produced food? Do you have a food garden in your school or at home? If not, do you want one?

Benefits of eating locally
Eating locally produced foods does help solve the climate problem. Locally produced food has a smaller carbon footprint because of the transportation. The food is transported smaller distances which means that less pollution is being created. Normally local food is produced on small farms which are more prone to adopt environmentally friendly practices. Local foods keep nutrient cycling at the local level. This means that the nutrients that are produced in that place stay in that place. Eating local also has a social and economic impact. Often local food costs less that conventionally produced food and the money spent on that food stays in the community.
At home we have a food garden, in which we have produced; lettuce, aloe, lemons, carrots, tomatoes and peppers. I would like to increase the size of our food garden in order to lower the cost of food and to reduce my family's carbon footprint.
