How much does eating locally-produced food help the climate problem? What are the other potential environmental and social benefits of eating locally-grown/produced food? Do you have a food garden in your school or at home? If not, do you want one?

Eating food produced locally will reduce the carbon footprint because transporting food from halfway around the world can really be environmentally damaging. Eating locally grown food is also usually safer and healthier to eat because food being transported from far distances have a lot of preservatives (most of the time). I would like to have a garden at home so I could enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables that I would no longer need to drive to the store to purchase!
I agree. Locally grown food is better for you because once it is picked, the sooner you eat it, the more vitamins and nutrients there are. Produce loses its benefits the longer they sit. My family is growing some fruits in our backyard so that we can cut down on purchases made at the grocery store, which also saves us gas, which reduces pollution.
My own family has a garden in our backyard, and it's honestly one of the most rewarding things we have! Not only do you get the satisfaction of growing your own food, but you also have the reassurance of having it fresh with no preservatives. Not only that, but this cuts any emissions that would have been used to drive to the store for purchases. If you have the chance, try out growing your own garden!
I agree with you. Local food helps a lot to reduce the pollution!
Transporting food from across the country and around the world requires a considerable amount of fuel. This excessive fuel use contributes to air pollution. For example, in 2005, the import of fruits, nuts and vegetables into California by airplane released more than 70'000 tons of CO2! Almost 250,000 tons of global warming gases released were attributable to imports of food products(https://food-hub.org/files/resources/Food%20Miles.pdf). The principal reasons therefore we should buy only local food are that transports food contribute to damage the environment, damage the climate, damage the infrastructure, and in the end we have to pay the transport. (http://www.religioustolerance.org/tomek33.htm )
The environmental cost of food transport is about 3.8 billion dollars a year and every year it increase. If all of the food came from 20 km of where we live, we could save 2.1 billion dollars a year in environmental costs.
Local food is better because it has been grown using sustainable methods that makes it healthier because there have no been used toxic substances like pesticides, which contribute to pollution of ground water. For example, organic fruits and vegetables are grown without chemical substances.
Furthermore , another positive aspect of the local food is that the use of GMOs in organic systems is not permitted.( http://www.fao.org/organicag/oa-faq/oa-faq6/en/ )
These are some reasons for which my family has decided to cultivate fruit and vegetables at home. Now we have more than 4 vegetable gardens, and it's a beautiful thing because we always have fresh vegetable and we don't have to buy them.
