Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

I learned that our food choices do affect our carbon footprint. If I could create a societal policy I would incorporate more plant based food into the human diet. Did you know that the reason humans need meat is not because we need the nutrients from the animals litteral meat we actually just need the bacteria that the animal is eating and getting from the soil. This means that the animal is just the middle man for getting the bacteria we need into our system. The reason meat is really bad for the environment though is because we are putting all this food and water into the animal and getting only a tiny piece of meat out of it. If you think about it, if we just eat all the food we were going to feed the animals we would have way more food to eat then when we just eat the meat. With this higher abundance of food there would be less hunger needs because there would be more food in circulation around the world.
