Now It's Time for Action!

All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.

Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?

Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!

Putting our foot down and addressing the climate crisis

Taylor W (USA)

Around the world, and especially in the US, solving the issue and speaking up about the ongoing climate crisis has been left to us young people. Because many of the important politicians are more concerned with money then our future. How will we continue to address this crisis and make it clear that change must happen wether they like it or not.

I agree. As young people we need to take initiative because it is our planet that is going through the climate crisis also. We need to eat more green, walk or ride bikes for transportation as much as we can, and raise awareness and protest the lack of political action being taken by our leaders. Something that will help stop climate change that is not getting as much talk it planting more trees. According to science.howstuffworks.com planting more trees would help greatly reduce our greenhouse emissions. So yes I agree it is time to put our foot down and those were some of my suggestions for how to do so.

I agree, Greta Thunberg said, “I want you to act as if the house is on fire, because it is." Climate change is a looming issue for humanity and there’s only one way to beat it, together. Over 7 million people marched worldwide in the most recent climate march so people, especially governments would understand the severity of the issue. We can unite and try to stop climate change, but humans have already released a lot of greenhouse gasses. Nasa says,  “Even if we stopped emitting greenhouse gases today, global warming would continue to happen for at least several more decades, if not centuries.”

I agree, this impending crisis has mainly been left to the younger generation to deal with. Many people of older generations do not see, understand, or care about the kind of threats global warming poses for the world. People of Generation Z, like Greta Thunberg are doing what they can to help combat this crisis. Greta Thunberg has brought global attention to climate change and its disastrous effects and increased awareness. One of her quotes about my generation is, "We showed that we are united and that we, young people, are unstoppable" and I think many people of my generation should take this quote in stride and work together to end global warming. These people can try to put a stop to climate change by attending marches/rallies, take public transportation, walk or ride bikes, eat minimally processed, organic foods, reduce, reuse, recycle, and be wary of overall purchases.

People are so mad at the world and how everything has been for the past year, like the wildfires, COVID-19, many earthquakes. What I think is we are not allowed to be mad. This is just the earth giving back what we gave it. f we give hate we can expect hate back, it is like that in every aspect of our lives including the earth. We have to take this as seriously as the corona virus. As soon as that spread out governments took actions but we don´t see nearly as much about the climate change. I was raised to be good to the environment but the older generations were not and they are the ones that are not taking action and are leaving it to us because we are the ones that have to suffer from it. I do many things that are better for the environment and I don´t waste unnecessary.

I agree we young people have to stand up for are climate against are world leaders. We can also use more public transport and ride bikes and walk. We should also go to protest and marches to show the world leaders that we are going to save the environment. We need to stop global warming as soon as possible because some scientists fear that it has gotten so back it would take decades for the earth to return to the normal temperature.

I believe the only way to begin to make sure politicians act on climate change is to force it into their lives and disrupt their existence. They know good and well it's going to happen, and they know good and well they'll be dead by the time it harms them. We need to make a tangible reality that people don't want to die after the tipping point which is expected to take place in 2032. We have to take to the streets in order to make sure something legitimately gets done. They are holding a gun to our heads as well as the heads of all our families and friends. With 2019 being the hottest year ever recorded in human history, it's time we stop letting greedy politicians and businessmen take away our right to life one government subsidy at a time. If they'll burn the world down, then we have to fight the fire of their greed with the fire of our passion to live, our passion to lead, and, if necessary, our passion to fight.
