Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Plastic bottles

Alms

I believe that in their entirety plastic bottles should be replaced by returnable bottles so as not to generate more plastic waste.

I agree but you have to consider that it's unrealistic in some parts of the world. Replacing plastic would be ideal but often people are not prepared to buy reusable bottles because they are more expensive in the short term - it's all about appearances. I found that some people would rather keep buying and wasting money on plastic bottles than buy a solid reusable bottle because the long term cost doesn't really feel real compared to the momentary cost, you know what I mean?

LeanDepernet

It's true but it would be complicated since people would not always bring back the reusable bottles and we would end up producing more and more. So in the end people would stock the reusable bottles and not use them again.

vrbaeh

Yes, that would definitely happen and it would probably be unintentional too. With how fast our lives have become all of us have to think of 10 things at the same time and sometimes (even though it's shameful to say) remembering to take reusable get's off the list of priorities. For example, I've found myself at the checkout at a store multiple times with no reusable bag because I simply forgot to take it with me. I think this would happen with bottles too no matter how good people's intentions are. As I said, it's hard to think in the long term when you have pressing short term issues on your mind.

LeanDepernet

Actually I just thought about it, the stores could have plastic bottles and reusable ones. So if people don't have time to bring bottles back, they can buy plastic ones. Even though they would need people to wash them it could maybe work.

vrbaeh

Maybe it would. It's a good idea and I think it would work in some cases but wouldn't having plastic bottles to buy at stores ruin the purpose of having reusable ones? Since taking a reusable bottle with you can be seen as a hassle and so it would be easier to just buy a cheap plastic bottle? I think if your idea became reality the prices of plastic bottles would have to increase to discourage people from buying them yk?

LeanDepernet

Yes then people would stop buying them and maybe use the reusable ones.

vrbaeh

for sure because in the end, it's all about money ig... how to spend as little as possible, how to save as much as possible and that's relevant from all sides: individuals, shopping markets and governments alike

My family and I used to use plastic water bottles. We used to have a bin where we put the empty ones and then we would take it to a recycling center. Now we don't even use plastic water bottles we use actual water bottles.  It takes up to 1,000 years for plastic water bottles to decompose. There are 2 million tons of plastic water bottles in U.S landfills. https://healthyhumanlife.com/blogs/news … ottles-end
