Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food and hunger is nowadays one really big problem. There is more than 11% of world population who are hungry. On the other hand, people in others coutries throw food away. What do you think about that?

My first reaction was the food waste. throwing food away that has not been consumed yet is such a waste. Based off of our food choices, we mainly eat meats and poultry. But about 45% of fruits and veggies are thrown away on average. Those are the foods that help create less Co2 into our environment. Yet we throw away 21% of our meats and poultry. It takes so much to resources (water.. wheat.. etc etc) to keep agriculture and thats whats adding on to our Co2 levels. I feel that we should only purchase the foods that WE WILL be eating and will be using all products of.

I agree with you. 1 out of 10 people experience hunger every day. 11% is around 815 million people, so 815 million people don't get enough food to have a healthy life. People  in more "privileged" countries do have the tendency of throwing out food when they can't finish it and I find that very not okay. People should either donate left over food or not serve themselves so much food they can't finish it. Hunger around the world is a problem that is not mentioned as much as it should be.
