In the Northern Hemisphere in 2017 and 2018 brought several destructive hurricanes to the shores of North America, the Caribbean, and throughout the Pacific rim. Such extreme weather events are predicted to get more common and more severe with increasing climate change.
Several participating classes in the ISCFC were or are in the path of these storms and we hope for the best for them, their families and communities.
We would love to hear from students affected directly and indirectly by extreme weather events, and also any students who have been following the news this summer.
What are your thoughts about the connection between climate change and extreme weather events? Has this hurricane season increased your concern about climate change or not? Do you think that US citizens and residents (and others in the region) will take climate change more seriously now?
Extreme Weather >
extreme weather
Global warming has a huge impact on why we have such extreme weather conditions. Heatwaves, droughts, heavy rains, floods, hurricanes, etc. are all examples of global warming effects. According to GlobalChange.gov, Human-induced climate change has already increased the number and strength of some of these extreme events. Over the last 50 years, much of the U.S. has seen increases in prolonged periods of excessively high temperatures and extreme weather conditions. In conclusion, global warming is the main cause of extreme weather.
I totally agree with what you are saying. In a similar note climate change due to our human activities are also affecting the biodiversity and ecosystems in the world we live in. According to Lauren Harper, it is our works that can negatively impact the environment for us as well as other organisms that live on earth as well. As Harper states, "Turning natural areas into cities or agricultural fields not only diminishes biodiversity, but can make warming worse by chopping down trees and plants that help cool the planet". With the lack of our natural resources to sustain our environment it causes factors like global warming to rise at an exponential rate. With that being said, due to climate change drastic extreme weather changes could appear such as droughts, erosion along the coast line, and the diminishing of the natural resources in order for humans to survive. Although humans are part of the blame for the extreme weather shifts and climate change there are some possible smaller actions humans are able to help the environment. For example, switching over to LED lightings, unplugging unused appliances, and growing native plants can benefit the environment by reducing the greenhouse gas emissions being sent into the atmosphere.
I agree that humans must start to realize that what they are doing is hurting the environment and that it is p to everybody to help try to fix it. The climates will only worsen if it continues to go ignored so it is important that we start to acept that this is real and then focus on how do we solve it.
