Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Beef

I think that something we often forget about is beef consumption and how much this can add to our carbon footprint. According to insideclimatenews.org, 221 grams of carbon is emitted for every gram of beef. This may not seem like a lot but it is in comparison to pork which is 36 grams of carbon for each gram of pork. This is something everyone should know when going into everyday life. When you are deciding between getting a pork chop or a steak, maybe choose a steak.
Not only does beef release a lot of carbon, but it also uses a ton of water. According to foodtank.com, it takes 1799 gallons of water to make only one pound of steak. Overall steak is not a good thing for our eath and sustainability. I love steak and burgers as much as the next, so giving it up completely is sadly not a realistic option, but I believe that if everyone was conscious about where the food that they are eating came from, and how much resources it took to make them, then we could help the carbon emissions go down and do our part to help.

We can do better. There is a company that makes beef out of plants whit the same smell and tasted like beef and I think that could really help the climate change and carbon footprints.

There are things we can do to reduce carbon footprint. We can reduce beef breeding so there is less carbon footprint.

Fixing how much beef people consume is by far an easy fix. Though it is not easy it is very much so possible. Small steps is the best way to go but it is where we take those small steps is very important. I believe that having more vegetarian meals in cafeteria is the best way to go. According to www.healthline.com 40 to 80 percent more dishes were vegetarian in cafeterias. So we are already taking the steps we just have to continue. This also is a better step because it influences the next generation to be healthy and stop the using beef products.

I believe that one simple way for us to take action against climate change is by boycotting the Palm Oil industries. Many people forget or do not know about the harmful effects that it has on the environment due to present their products are in our everyday lives. The Palm Oil Industry is notorious for clear-cutting forests. This has a big impact on climate change because it releases more Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere. Zoe Shlanger, an environment reporter, writes in "The global demand for palm oil is driving the fires in Indonesia" that when the trees burn down, all of the carbon dioxide that they have absorbed gets released into the air. Additionally, there are also fewer trees to absorb carbon dioxide in the future as a result. Moreover, 80% of the fires and deforestation in Indonesia is for more palm oil plantations. The Palm Oil Industry clearly causes immense destruction and contributes heavily to global warming. Be sure to watch out for their products in our local markets. They are everywhere from toothpaste to chips.

I agree that people should be more conscious about the meat they are eating, not just beef. In the article "Eating Less Meat Essential to Curb Climate Change", by Damian Carrington, he writes that the global livestock industry emits more greenhouse gases than all transportation does. A study showed that most people thought transportation emits the most greenhouse so many people aren't aware of the detrimental effects that farming livestock has on the environment. Even though cutting out meat entirely is not realistic for many people, we can still be aware of how much meat we eat, and try to eat less. We can also add more plants into our diet because it releases less greenhouse gases and takes less room to produce the same amount as meat.
