Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Irrigation and Agriculture sustainability

In 2025 there will be an estimated 8 billion people living on planet earth. With all of those people in the world, there will need to be even more food. With our current inefficient agricultural techniques, this could add to the growing issue of global hunger. According to the USDA, the surface water in the United States from agriculture accounts for approximately 80 percent of the Nation's consumptive use of water and over 90 percent in many Western States. If the world population reaches 8 billion there might not be enough water to grow the crops necessary to feed the animals that we use for food which will add on even more to world hunger. A solution to this could be to start limiting water usage throughout the U.S population. Most of the time, U.S citizens like me take water for granted. I tend to take long showers in the morning and running appliances like dishwashers dryers, and washing machines. If people start saving water all over the world, it would help save water beneficial for agriculture necessary for food.
