Extreme Weather

In the Northern Hemisphere in 2017 and 2018 brought several destructive hurricanes to the shores of North America, the Caribbean, and throughout the Pacific rim. Such extreme weather events are predicted to get more common and more severe with increasing climate change.

Several participating classes in the ISCFC were or are in the path of these storms and we hope for the best for them, their families and communities.

We would love to hear from students affected directly and indirectly by extreme weather events, and also any students who have been following the news this summer.

What are your thoughts about the connection between climate change and extreme weather events? Has this hurricane season increased your concern about climate change or not? Do you think that US citizens and residents (and others in the region) will take climate change more seriously now?

Humans are increasing the severity of extreme weather conditions throughout the world. Global warming continues to affect the weather, through events like heat waves, droughts, heavy rain events, intense hurricanes, flooding, and severe wildfires also occurring more frequently (Kate Richard from Yale). Especially living in an area that experiences frequent drought, I have seen how droughts have been occurring more frequently and with a more intense impact. With the increasing carbon emissions, the climate has continued to warm which impacts extreme weather events around the world including the extreme fires that happened in Australia between 2019 and 2020.

If we don't start taking action in environmental problems the earth will not be able to keep us alive for much longer. The extreme weather changes are becoming more scary each time and do a lot more damage than before.

The weather is becoming more extreme year by year or even month by month. The winds are getting so strong that they can blow away anything in their way. Rain is more extreme somewhere in the world and somewhere the weather is getting colder. And somewhere much hotter. I think if we don´t do something soon for our planet to make this extreme weather chill, we will end up constantly moving places.
