In the Northern Hemisphere in 2017 and 2018 brought several destructive hurricanes to the shores of North America, the Caribbean, and throughout the Pacific rim. Such extreme weather events are predicted to get more common and more severe with increasing climate change.
Several participating classes in the ISCFC were or are in the path of these storms and we hope for the best for them, their families and communities.
We would love to hear from students affected directly and indirectly by extreme weather events, and also any students who have been following the news this summer.
What are your thoughts about the connection between climate change and extreme weather events? Has this hurricane season increased your concern about climate change or not? Do you think that US citizens and residents (and others in the region) will take climate change more seriously now?
Extreme Weather >
the temperature
Climate change is one of the most serious public health issues facing America today. The annual average temperature in the United States has increased by 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit from 1901 to 2016 and is expected to rise an additional 2.5 degrees, according to the U.S. Global Change Research Program. This has led to increased drought, more frequent wildfires, and other effects of climate change that can’t be stopped.
I totally agree that climate change is one of the most serious public health issues in the modern world.
climate change is for sure getting a lot worse and serious, especially in the US.
I agree Greenhouse gases have caused the temperature of the earth to rise faster than it ever has in history. Some people believe it is natural but scientists have said that the increase is too fast for it to have happened naturally. This increase in greenhouse gases have partly been caused by the burning of fossil fuels by companies and factories around the world. People need to start to realize before it causes too much damage to ecosystems.
I completely agree that climate change is a massive problem for the world and more needs to be done to try and slow it down or solve the problem.
This is so smart! I totally agree, climate change is such an important issue and we need to be focusing on it to save our planet while we still can.
Global analyses show that the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere has in fact increased due to human-caused warming. This extra moisture is available to storm systems, resulting in heavier rainfalls. Climate change also alters characteristics of the atmosphere that affect weather patterns and storms.
