Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food waste isn't talked about much in the media and other things of the such and doesn't some important. But nearly one-third of all food produced each year is squandered or spoiled before it can be consumed. For many Americans, this food waste happens in the kitchen;  when we prepare food that goes uneaten or leaves food to spoil in our fridges and cabinets. This isn't acceptable and needs to be looked at and fixed. However, some people do take initiative and help out the community outside them or around them. WFP is also tackling food waste by boosting access to local markets. This includes sourcing its school meals with locally grown crops, working with communities to build better roads and storage facilities

I agree, food waste isn’t a big topic in the media today and in the past.  People waste food all the time and it is very common today.  In restaurants, there are lots of tables that are empty and plates are still covered in food.  At the dinner table, not everyone finishes their food.  These actions do not benefit the community, in fact, it hurts it a lot. For example, at school, not all kids finish their lunch, and some throw their trash into the wrong bin.  Food waste should be taken more seriously around the globe and around the media.
