Hunger around the world is a problem that continues to grow. According to worldhunger.org, it is estimated that 815 million people suffer from chronic undernourishment as of 2016. Most of the people struggling with hunger and finding food live in developing countries. Issues with hunger continue to get worse, as news.un.org says the number of people who suffer from hunger has slowly increased over the past three years. Hunger around the world is caused by many different factors, but poverty is one of the leading contributors. Nearly 1/2 of the world’s population live on less than $2.50 a day, more than 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty -- less than $1.25 a day and according to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. This lack of financial stability leaves people unable to buy necessities, such as food. As well as poverty, food waste also contributes to worldwide hunger. According to theguardian.com, About 150,000 tons of food is tossed out in US households each day, equivalent to about a third of the daily calories that each American consumes. Fruit and vegetables were the most likely to be thrown out, followed by dairy and then meat. A huge amount of food is wasted each day, food that people who are hungry are struggling to obtain. Finally, poor nutritional quality is yet another contributing factor to hunger, as well as future health problems. When people struggle to get food, they tend to take whatever meal they can get, without considering the nutrition of the food they are eating. As stated by sahealth.sa.gov.au, this leads those suffering from hunger to develop further health problems such as tooth decay, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and stroke, type-2 diabetes, osteoporosis, some cancers, depression, and even eating disorders. Hunger is an issue that can permanently affect a person and it continues to affect a huge portion of the population. This is a problem that affects many communities and needs to keep having those trying to resolve these issues.
