Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Reuse & Repurpose

There are many ways to reuse and repurpose objects in the world. The three R’s of the environment is to reduce, reuse, and recycle. These three R’s are to protect the Earth by removing waste. Using reusable water bottles is a huge way to help remove waste from the Earth. If everyone used metal water bottles it would help reduce the amount of plastic in our ocean. Another way to reduce plastic is by using reusable grocery bags. If everyone helped and did these two things it would be a start of helping our Earth. Some ways of repurposing objects such as clothes are hand me downs. This way people would not have to spend money on new clothes and it would not be going to waste. One more object that helps reduce waste is reusable batteries. Many objects in the world require batteries, such as flashlights, tv remotes, calculators, and so many other everyday objects. So instead of using non-reusable batteries people should use reusable ones. If people do not start reusing, recycling, and repurposing objects then the Earth will become dirtier and dirtier. For example, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. This garbage patch in the middle of the ocean is the result of not taking care of the Earth very well and not recycling and reusing. If we do not do something soon eventually the whole world will become a huge garbage patch. It should not matter if a person feels even if they recycle it’s not helping the Earth, because even so everyone should do their part in the world and be an example to everyone.

I agree with what you mean and overall purpose, but I do not think that strictly cutting out plastic or use only reusable item will help protect the earth and oceans from pollution. According to Ocean Today, a website by the government and Department of Commerce (https://oceantoday.noaa.gov/trashtalk_w … scomefrom/), most of the garbage in the ocean comes from waste that was intentionally dumped or littered. The remaining trash ends up in the ocean from wind blowing waste out of trash cans that are unsecure, or blowing litter into storm drains. Overall, if waste is not put into a waste basket where it is sure to be handled properly by waste management companies, then it will eventually in some way end up in the ocean. The big picture here is not to be concerned as much about what we are using, although using reusable or recyclable items is very helpful to the environment, but focus more on what we are doing with the materials used. Do you think that the weather that is being affected by climate change will alter how and how much trash gets spread to the ocean?
