Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

About 94 percent of foods we throw away end up in combustion facilities or landfills. In 2017, we discarded over 38.1 million tons of food waste. We need to reduce our wasted food and compost to decrease our carbon footprint and our world. We can help in a few forms. Firstly, we can start by buying less food overall. We can limit ourselves by meal planning and making a small grocery list of only necessities. We can also check your fridge and pantry to see all of the items you already own and can use. Another effective solution is by sorting your food when done eating. I know that taking those few extra seconds may not seem important, yet it will be in the long run. 28 percent of what we throw away can actually be composted. We can compost by making an indoor compost bin or outdoor compost pile. Making an extra effort a few times a day can reduce your carbon footprint and even out planet!
