What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food and Hunger
According to UC Davis Magazine, "Nearly one-third of all the food that is produced in the world never gets eaten. By some estimates, we waste 30 million tons of food in the U.S. and 1.3 billion metric tons worldwide every year." Wasting food is a huge problem worldwide and it is also bad for the earth and the environment around us. Wasting food wastes all the materials it takes to grow that food as well. If we're wasting millions of tons of food per year, we are also wasting millions of gallons of water. Less than 1% of the freshwater on Earth is for humans to consume. Most of it goes towards agriculture. There are also some countries where freshwater is scarce and if the countries who have plenty of water waste it, then that narrows the chance even more for people who don't have access to freshwater to get it. Rotting food also releases Methane. When spoiled food is thrown out and makes its way to the landfill, it will start producing methane which is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming.
