Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

According to my Carbon Footprint, the food my family and I eat the most is meat. Meat is not necessary to a humans diet because according to Dr. Hu the chair of the department of Nutrition in Harvard University, he says you can get the same essential nutrients or more eating fish, poultry, and eggs. Eating too much meat can cause health concerns such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Also, according to the Environmental Working Group, the production and processing of meat requires a lot of pesticide, fertilize, fuel and water while releasing greenhouse gases, manure, and toxic chemicals. Researchers are saying that the global meat production will double by 2050 to about 1.2 trillion pounds a year. My family has been more aware to not eat as much meat after I told them. I hope less intake of meat can occur in every family to help our earth be saved.
